Holyman in Kathmandu's Durbar Square rev 1.jpg

So, you want to take your photography to the next level and need some coaching and instruction on how to do it. You've pretty much got setting your aperture and shutter speeds down, but still have questions on other techniques and aspects of your camera. You are still working on composition and lighting, but have some general ideas on what you want to do. Right? Photo 201 is the class for you.

Come and let me work with you one on one.  Let me look over your shoulder and see what you are doing and how you are doing it. I can coach you on different ways of shooting the same scene, creating a new look, and refining your existing skill. I will give personalized instruction on mastering shutter speeds and aperture, working with natural and artificial (flash) light. and story telling through your lens. As a photo journalist my strength lies in telling stories with photos and creating images that "capture eyes". Story telling is important whether you are taking pictures of your kids or shooting your next documentary. Attend this class and let me show you how.

In Photo 201 we will be working on location in a target rich and colorful environment. Here's what the class includes:

  • You will be coached on getting the shot you want using your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Now that you know what they are, let's put them to work.

Imagine how your images will change once you have practiced adding motion to your image or completely freezing your subject.

  • Class includes instruction, techniques, and equipment to use for natural and artificial light to bring out the best in your subject.

Sometimes natural (available) light doesn't look so natural. Like clay, you must learn to mold it to look like you want it to look. Photo 201 will demonstrate the tools to make that happen, and participants will have a chance to use those tools.

  •  Come and learn the 5 best tips for taking photos that tell stories. As you know, there is a difference between snapshots and photos shot with intent. Come and learn story telling techniques that are effective and easy to remember.

Photo 201 is a three session workshop which includes meeting before the shoot to review techniques and discuss the assignments for shoot day. The second meeting is on shoot day on location. Participants will be given a shot list as an assignment to motivate them to hone the skills taught in class. I will be there to work one on one with you to answer your questions and help you get the shot you envision. The third session will be an interactive online video conference where you can participate from the comfort of your living room (or where ever you choose). We will discuss shots you submit from shoot day and give you feedback on your work. It's a great opportunity to see how your fellow students took the same types of shots everyone was assigned. A demonstration as to the ease with which photos can be stitched together will also be a part of this interactive online session.

For the first session we will meet on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30. We are working on the technology to have participants be able to attend this session via the Internet if they prefer. Shoot day is the following Sunday from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m., and the third session is online on the following Monday from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Students will need a broadband internet connection to participate online.

Come and get your questions answered and your Photo 201 technique refined. It will be a fun and educational class.

Pre-requisites for this class include Photo 101 and a working knowledge of the basics of camera operation. If you can work your shutter and aperture independently (which means you don't need to shoot on automatic) this is the class for you.
