The former Tarr Furniture building was demolished today as Kolter Urban prepares to build its 55-story condominium tower ONE Tampa. According to reports, the structure will be the tallest residential development on Florida’s west coast. The 311-unit tower plans to incorporate a facsimile of the Tarr building into its design. Locals fought for the preservation of the building but lost. Historically, there is no winning against companies the size of the Kotler Group. The City Council and other decision-makers have no stomach for litigation or the temerity to push back hard against big money. The building, an eyesore to some because of its boarded-up windows, was doomed soon after Kolter acquired the block. Watching it be destroyed was like watching the autopsy of a family member.
